The Overwhelming Reality of Unopened Bills
Tell me if this sounds familiar. You’ve got a stack of unopened bills sitting on the counter, or maybe in the digital counter, aka your email inbox. Every time you walk past them, you think, I should really take care of that.
But you don’t.
It’s the same thing with the emails — it’s like they’re there, and you think, “I should do that,” but you still don’t take care of it. Or maybe you’ve got piles of receipts that you swear you’re going to put into QuickBooks one day.
Are You Trusting the Universe Or Just Avoiding?
Maybe your version is a little different. You tell yourself you’re trusting the universe to provide, while deep down you’re really just scared to look at your actual numbers. If that’s you, you might be in one of the avoider roles.
Today, we’re going to get into what they look like, what the underlying fear typically is, and one mini shift you can make today to step out of the avoider role. So let’s get to it.

Pulling Back the Curtain on Avoider Money Roles
Welcome back to Money Simplified. I’m your host, Aimee Cerka.
Really, episode three. Almost. Episode two — we had our introduction roll into our money roll series, and last week we talked about the earners who are leaking money.
But in this series, we’re pulling back the curtain on the hidden roles that we play with money. They aren’t who you are. They’re just characters, actors, roles that you’ve slipped into.
And the best part: you can choose a new role at any time.
Five Avoider Roles and How They Keep You Stuck
In this episode, we’re going to explore some of the most common money roles of the avoiders. We’ll cover how they show up in everyday life and small shifts you can make to step into something healthier.
I’ve got five more roles, so five avoider roles. We’re going to talk about the sneaky ways that keep you stuck and what you can do to step out of them.
And again, as we get into this, remember, this isn’t shame — this isn’t judgment. These roles aren’t permanent. They’re just scripts that you’ve slipped into and you can choose a new role at any moment.
The Bill Dodger: Safer Not to Know
The first avoider we’re going to talk about is the Bill Dodger. This could mean unopened envelopes piling up, or all the emails in your inbox left unopened. Maybe you’re deleting emails without even looking at them, including important emails, not just the ones that aren’t actually important.
Or maybe you skip opening your QuickBooks bank account, all of those things, because it feels overwhelming.
This is quite common, because behind the scenes, it feels safer not to know. Our subconscious mind is trying to create safety. It’s fascinating to learn how your nervous system works and how it’s trying to protect you.
The Stress Builds in the Background
It feels safer not to know, but in the background, the stress is just building and building. It does not go away. We’re just putting it off.
So the small shift, if this is you: Pick one thing that you’re going to tackle. Is it those emails you’re scared to open? Schedule it — “I’m going to open it at this time.”
Or is it that stack of envelopes, the physical mail you have to go through? Or is it QuickBooks, your accounting software, whatever it might be, schedule a time, ideally today, spend 15 minutes on it and set the timer.
Execution Matters: Making Time for Your Finances
It feels contained when you set a timer — it doesn’t feel like it’s going to take forever. Often, when you start with fifteen minutes, you’ll want to work longer. But even if it’s just fifteen minutes, that’s progress.
This is a large part of why Execution Lab exists — it helps you do the things you need to with your money. Because we don’t make time for it. It’s not the bright red, flashing light.
So, today, make it the bright red dot and get rid of your red dots.
The Receipt Collector: Responsible but Overwhelmed
The second role I see show up in the avoiding collection is the Receipt Collector. This can be literal receipts or digital receipts. In a digital age, we may not have the tangible, but it’s still there.
We’re collecting all the receipts, putting them in your purse, the glove box, a junk drawer, or in a box. You’ve got a system for it. You’re putting all the receipts somewhere, or they’re all in your email.
You’ve got them all, right?
Chaos Happens When You Delay
The belief here behind the scenes is “I’m responsible, I’ve got this.” I’ll take care of this someday. But right now it’s chaos. And then we end up avoiding it as well. We’re not actually doing anything, it just piles up and we create this work for later.
But we’re holding on to the receipts because you’re responsible, right? No shame, no judgment — we’ve all done all of these things. We’ve all fallen into these roles.
Handling Receipts Like a Pro
Your mini shift if you are a receipt collector: Handle them. Take care of the receipts once a week, once a month — what works for you? Instead of just letting them pile up, process them.
Are you digitizing them? Scanning them into QuickBooks? Do you even need them? Take care of it, process it. Take the action you need as a responsible person.
The One Day Organizer: Don’t Delay Systems
Oh, this is a fun one. I see this one so often.
The One Day Organizer says, “I’ll get my system set up when I make more money.” Maybe you buy the planner or the software and you never use it.
You said, maybe heard last week when we talked about automating our savings or our profit — “I’ll do that later.” I’ll do that one day when I make more income.
Then I’ll take care of that.
Systems Save You Money Now
The problem with this is the delay creates more chaos later. And your body knows it, your nervous system knows it. Then we self-sabotage and we won’t make the money, to protect ourselves from the chaos we know is coming.
When you have the systems in place before the money shows up, before all of the income you want to create — and if it’s showing up now, fantastic — put the system in place now. Stop putting it off.
Systems save you money now.
Simple Shifts Toward a Better Financial Role
Choose a system. Your mini shift or mini action step if you have fallen into the one day organizer: What’s one system, one place you were putting off that you could work on now? Is it your bookkeeping? Is it your business budget? Is it enrolling in the unstoppable experience? What are you putting off and say “one day?”
Don’t delay the chaos.
It doesn’t have to be chaos. Get the support; have it be simple.
Don’t put it off, because it’s costing you money, it’s costing you your impact. There are people out there who are waiting for you to help them. You’ve got to do what you were called to do so that you can go help others.
The Hopeful Improviser: Optimism Isn’t Enough
Next up, our fourth role for today: The Hopeful Improviser. They rely on optimism. “It’ll all work out.” Instead of actually looking at the numbers, they use feminine energetics as almost like a shield.
We’re declaring, money’s gonna come, it’s gonna show up. But we’re really just avoiding the money. We’re not checking the bank account, we’re not doing anything.
We’re putting our trust in the universe that it’s going to show up, but we’re not doing our part of the equation.
Faith and Strategy Must Go Hand in Hand
We don’t have that stewardship in place. We’re spending money because we believe it’s going to show up, but then we’re panicking when the overdrafts hit and we’re overspending.
There’s a balance here.
Behind the scenes: faith, optimism, and belief are important. The trust you have in the universe is so important. But you’ve got to have strategy with it. You’ve got to pair it with action. Plant the seeds so the rain can come.
Simple Shift: Check Your Numbers
Your shift today, if you’re like, “Oh, yeah, I’ve been the hopeful improviser,” and haven’t done the things: another thing here, maybe you’ve thought about doing the thing, like checking your bank account, sending the sales email, and you feel like you’ve done it.
Go back and look at what you’ve actually done. See how much you thought about it versus how much you actually did.
Your shift today could be as simple as checking your bank account. If you’re avoiding sending the email to give the opportunity for people to work with you, send the email.
Yes, I firmly believe that seeds we planted in the past can still be watered; they can still show up now. But again, we should be working on both.
The Hider: Secrecy and Shame Around Money
The final role in our avoider category is the Hider. The hider is not telling their partner, their coach, or maybe even themselves, what’s really going on with money.
They avoid discussing finances with the people in their life, the support systems they have in place.
Maybe you’re working with a coach, but you won’t talk about finances. Now, we could do a whole caveat on business coaches versus a financial coach and when you need both.
Isolation is Not Control
You can hire a business coach with general financial knowledge, but there’s value in going specific, especially if this is an issue. If you’re hiding it, not telling your partner about the credit card debt or a purchase you made, secretly hoping nobody notices the struggle — behind the scenes, at the root, it feels like there’s control because you’re keeping it a secret.
Reality: it’s creating shame and isolation, and probably even fear that you can’t get out of it.
Here’s the mini shift I want you to make: if you’re in the hider role, tell one safe person one piece of financial truth. And if you don’t have somebody who’s a safe person, I’m here for you. Send me a message on Instagram @AimeeCerka.
That is a foundational value for me in the way I work — no shame, no judgment. Your choices are just that: choices. We can choose differently moving forward if we want to.
Empower Yourself to Move Forward
I’m not here to beat you up. I’m here to empower you to move forward. We’ve all done things; we’ve all slipped into these roles, probably all of them at some point.
There’s no shame, there’s no judgment.
This is about moving forward and empowering you to move forward.
Recapping Avoider Money Roles and Moving Beyond
So, those are our five money roles: the Bill Dodger, letting everything pile up because it feels safer not to know; the Receipt Collector, gathering things but not handling them; the One Day Organizer, delaying and creating chaos for later; the Hopeful Improviser, leaning into optimism and energetics but not into numbers; and the Hider, not telling partners, coaches, or even themselves what’s going on with money.
Here’s the truth about avoidance: it gives you short-term relief, but just that — it’s short term. We’re kicking the can farther down the road and it steals your long-term peace, success, joy, and happiness.
So let’s shift that together.
Centering Mantra for Stepping Out of Avoider Roles
Your centering phrase mantra for today if you’re falling into one of these avoider roles: Clarity creates peace. I’m safe to see the numbers today. I’m okay. I’m safe. I’m right where I need to be.
Say those things to yourself when you feel yourself slipping into the avoider roles.
Next Steps and Further Support
I would love to support you inside one of the signature programs. We’ve got Unstoppable Experience and Money Mastery Academy. If you’re ready for that kind of support, check out the links in the show notes, or visit https://aimeecerka.com.
At a minimum, if you’re ready to take this deeper, grab the Money Mindset Playbook, because your money role and your mindset are linked and the playbook is going to help you uncover and reset the beliefs that are underneath these patterns that are showing up. You can grab that for free at https://aimeecerka.com/mindset — that link is also in the show notes.
Remember: you’re not stuck as an avoider. That’s not your sentence. You can always choose a new role, and you can choose now. When you do, money becomes a source of clarity instead of stress.
Connect and Take Action
Now, we are halfway through our Money Roll series. We talked about earners who are leaking money last week, avoiders this week, and we have two more categories to cover before we get to dive into the money role that we want to embody, the money role that we are choosing to step into.
