Episode 253: Knowing Isn’t the Problem – Why Your Money Habits Still Aren’t Sticking

There’s a specific kind of frustration that doesn’t get talked about enough.

It’s the moment where you realize… you already know what to do with your money.
You’ve learned it. You understand it. You could probably explain it to someone else.

And yet—when it comes to actually doing it, something doesn’t click.

So you start questioning yourself.
Why am I avoiding this?
Why can’t I just follow through?
What’s wrong with me?

This episode gently challenges that narrative.

Because this isn’t about discipline, laziness, or needing a better system. It’s about what’s happening underneath the surface—how your body experiences money, what feels safe (or unsafe), and why avoidance can sometimes be protection, not failure.

If you’ve been stuck in that quiet gap between knowing and doing, this conversation will help you understand it in a different, more supportive way.

Why You Can’t Follow Through With Money (Even When You Know What to Do)

You’re not confused—so why does it still feel so hard?

There’s a specific kind of frustration that comes up when it comes to money.

You’ve learned the strategies.
You understand what needs to happen.
You could probably explain it to someone else.

And yet… when it comes time to actually follow through, something doesn’t happen.

So you start questioning yourself.
Why am I avoiding this?
Why can’t I just do it?

This is where most people assume the problem is discipline. Or consistency. Or that they just haven’t found the right system yet.

But that’s not what’s actually going on.

The Real Reason You’re Not Following Through With Money

It’s not about knowledge—it’s about safety

If you know what to do but aren’t doing it, the issue usually isn’t information.

It’s that something in your system doesn’t feel safe enough to follow through.

This can show up as:

  • Avoiding your bank account
  • Putting off budgeting or bookkeeping
  • Starting systems but not sticking with them
  • Feeling overwhelmed the moment you try to take action

From the outside, it can look like inconsistency.

But internally, it often feels like resistance you can’t explain.

Understanding the Gap Between Knowing and Doing

Why awareness doesn’t automatically lead to action

There’s a common assumption that once you understand something, you’ll naturally act on it.

But money doesn’t work that way.

Money is layered with:

  • Emotional experiences
  • Past patterns
  • Nervous system responses
  • Identity and self-trust

So even if your logical mind is clear, your body might still be responding with hesitation or avoidance.

And when that happens, pushing harder usually makes it worse.

Why You Keep Avoiding Your Finances

Avoidance isn’t laziness—it’s protection

One of the most important shifts in this conversation is understanding this:

Avoidance is often your body trying to protect you.

If money has ever felt:

  • Stressful
  • Overwhelming
  • Shame-filled
  • Unpredictable

Then your system may treat it like a threat.

Not metaphorically—but physically.

That’s why you can sit down to “just check your numbers” and suddenly feel:

  • Tension
  • Discomfort
  • Urgency to do literally anything else

It’s not that you don’t care.

It’s that your system is trying to keep you safe.

Why New Systems Don’t Solve the Problem

It’s not the app, the template, or the strategy

A lot of entrepreneurs respond to this by trying to find the right system.

A better budgeting app.
A cleaner spreadsheet.
A new method that will finally make things click.

But if the underlying experience of money still feels unsafe, those tools won’t stick.

You might:

  • Start strong
  • Feel hopeful
  • Then slowly stop using it

And that reinforces the belief that you’re the problem.

But the real issue is this:

You’re trying to implement systems on top of a foundation that doesn’t feel stable yet.

The “Operating System” Shift

Why internal capacity matters more than external tools

Instead of asking, “What system should I use?”
A more helpful question is:

“What do I need in order to feel safe enough to use any system consistently?”

This is what I refer to as your internal operating system.

When that’s supported, things change:

  • You can stay present with your numbers
  • You don’t spiral as quickly
  • You’re able to follow through in a more consistent way

Not because you forced it—but because it feels more manageable.

You Might Not Be Designed to Do This the Same Way

Different people process and act differently

Another layer to this is that not everyone naturally operates the same way.

Some people:

  • Take an idea and immediately act on it

Others:

  • Process deeply, think conceptually, and need more support turning ideas into action

If you’re in the second group, it doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.

It means:
you may need a different kind of support, structure, or pacing.

Trying to force yourself into a method that doesn’t match how you naturally work often creates more frustration—not less.

Why Nothing Seems to “Stick”

It’s not a lack of effort

If you’ve tried multiple systems and nothing sticks, it’s easy to assume you’re inconsistent.

But more often, it’s this:

  • The system didn’t feel safe
  • The approach didn’t match how you operate
  • The emotional layer wasn’t addressed

So you keep starting over, thinking the next thing will fix it.

When really, the shift happens when you stop trying to fix yourself—and start understanding what you actually need.

Key Takeaways

  • Knowing what to do with money doesn’t guarantee follow-through
  • Avoidance is often a protective response, not laziness
  • Tools and systems don’t work if your internal experience of money feels unsafe
  • Sustainable change comes from supporting your nervous system and capacity, not forcing action
  • You may need a different approach based on how you naturally think and operate

A More Supportive Next Step

If this resonated, you don’t need to rush into fixing anything.

A more helpful next step is simply understanding what’s underneath your patterns.

Inside my free private podcast, Breaking the Money Cycle, I walk through the six key shifts that support this work—so you can start seeing why things haven’t been sticking, and what actually helps.

You can explore that at:

Welcome back to Money Simplified. Today we’re getting into the I know what I need to do, I just can’t seem to do it feeling.

Link is gonna be in the show notes below, okay? Or go to https://aimeecerka.com/moneycycle.

Why Knowing Isn’t the Problem

Now let’s get to it. So if you’ve ever said, I know what to do and I just can’t seem to do it, again, that’s what we’re talking about.

There are some people, and I would say even like within some things, like we are natural executors. You get an idea and you just implement it.

You just go take action. You go try things. And others are more like visionary. We can be more creative, more conceptual thinkers, and we live like in this world of thought.

Right, like we can explain this concept beautifully. You can see the whole picture, but making it concrete and specific and actionable and taking action on it—that’s where it breaks down.

This Is Not a Character Flaw

This is not a character flaw.

There’s two things that are coming up primarily.

The first would be wiring, like your money wiring. The money work, all of these systems in the concrete execution—if you’re like, I can think about these things all day long, but actually taking action on it, making it actualize, that’s the challenge.

When Money Feels Unsafe

So our money wiring piece, this is the nervous system.

When money feels unsafe, when it feels safer to avoid it, when there’s fear or shame or I don’t wanna feel that way, like we treat it as a threat.

And it’s not like a metaphorical threat. Like we really feel like a tiger’s coming and we protect ourselves.

Right? It’s amazing.

And we end up, we avoid it. It’s not laziness, it’s protection. Your body is trying to keep you safe.

Why Tools and Apps Don’t Fix It

So if you’re downloading apps, right, like you are downloading the new budgeting app, right? Like Monarch got really popular last year.

You’re downloading these new systems, you’re doing the things. It’s not the app that’s the problem.

The budgeting template you found isn’t the problem. The affirmations aren’t the problem.

It’s you’re trying to download a smartphone app on a typewriter.

Your operating system is not gonna work.

Upgrading Your Operating System

We have to take care of you. The programming, the system.

Let’s get you up to date. Let’s get you the new PC.

Upgrade your operating system with the strategy, the mindset—we have those pieces, yes—but the nervous system safety to be like, okay, I can do this thing.

We need all the pieces, but all the tactical pieces don’t matter if you aren’t putting it on something that’ll actually work.

The Role of Human Design and How You’re Wired

And the second piece of this is there are different ways that we are designed to operate as human beings.

I love and use human design within a lot of my tactical things. So I’m a 1/3, I’ve got a three line in my design.

The three line, we go and try things. So I don’t have as much of a problem like, hey, let’s go try it.

Let me go figure this out. Let me try this out. I will do this. Let’s see.

Why Some People Struggle More With Action

And if you’re not that person, like I’ve got a coaching client inside the Unstoppable Experience, we were talking the other day about this exact thing.

Like she can know what to do and she can think about it conceptually, but taking action on it is harder.

She’s designed to do this differently.

But we still have to work on upgrading the operating system so that she can handle it.

Why Nothing Is Sticking

Because if we are not, we can’t find the actual app in the system that’ll work for her.

Whether that’s her doing it herself or getting support with it, if we’re not on the operating system that we need, we’ve gotta feel safe enough to hold it.

So if we’re avoiding the thing, if you know what to do and you’re just not doing it, why are we just not doing it?

You’re Not the Problem

It’s not like you’re the problem.

You’re not broken.

There’s nothing wrong with you.

Your body, your mind is trying to keep you safe. We have to retrain it that you are safe.

That money is a partner and it’s a healthy partnership.

Stop Jumping From System to System

But jumping from template to template or downloading the bundle and downloading all the resources and getting on a million email lists because you feel like something’s missing and you just need the right system—that’s not true.

We’ve gotta work on this part.

Why Support Actually Matters

A lot of us, and I think anybody who’s a coach should be raising their hand agreeing with me—we can know our stuff.

You are an amazing coach. You’re an amazing mentor.

But when it comes to coaching yourself, you got blind spots.

That’s why we have coaches. That’s why we have these people in our corner.

What Actually Creates Change

So upgrade the operating system, right?

We need all four pieces. We need the strategy, we need the mindset, we need the nervous system to be okay, we need to feel safe.

We need the support, but we can’t just piece it together.

It’s all gotta work together so that all of the pieces are talking.

The Real Shift: Stop Blaming Yourself

When you’re not beating yourself up because you’re avoiding the thing that you know you need to do, and we’ve worked on that and you understand it’s not a moral failure.

It’s like this is a design, like I need support here.

When you have somebody outside perspective to help you see that, that’s what changes.

Your Next Step

So if today helped you stop blaming yourself or like, oh, maybe I am blaming myself for this and I shouldn’t be—good.

That was the whole point.

So the next step is gonna be helping you see all six of the shifts that I was talking about.

That’s exactly what I cover inside Breaking the Money Cycle.
