Getting Back to Basics with Your Money
Today we are in a Back to Basics series. Over the next few weeks, we’ll talk through the foundational pieces that make a massive difference in your finances. This short and sweet series I’m pulling out of the vault will help you solidify your finances and open the door to quickly see massive growth. So let’s get to it.
Why Budgeting is Important
If you feel limited by the idea of a budget or you avoid it because it feels icky, or just don’t think that you need it because you’re not in debt or, you know, I can pay my bills, totally get that. I remember feeling hopeless and trying to budget when there just simply wasn’t enough income to pay the bills and I wanted to avoid it. I wanted to run away because it was such a source of stress and frustration because it felt like it wasn’t something that I could handle, it wasn’t something that I could solve. Like the numbers just didn’t work.
Budgets Help Set Priorities
So, like, what the heck, how do you do that? But budgeting is a tool, and it’s a tool that you need more than ever if you’re feeling those things. We use a budget to prioritize what is important. And the neat part of that about that is it’s specific to you and your life. Can you see where the your Money, you, Life podcast came from? If you’re not budgeting, I hate to break it to you, but you’re losing on average $7,500 a year simply because you’re not the one setting the priorities, you’re not the one setting the intentions, and if you’re not doing it, somebody else is.
Marketing’s Role in How We Spend
Marketing and advertising are billion dollar industries, and there’s nothing wrong with them. They benefit us. Right? Heck, I do marketing and advertising as well. But we need to be aware because your money is valuable and your time is valuable, and you should spend your money and your time on the things that are important to you.
Your Budget Empowers You
Not just because somebody successfully created a marketing campaign, simply setting the intention of where you want your money to go. Your budget isn’t about limiting you, it’s about letting you do more of what you want to do. Now, what that is, of course, is completely up to you and your priorities and what you’re working to achieve. But you have to be aware. That’s the first step.
Knowing You Need a Budget
The first step is normally admitting you have a problem. Let’s admit that we’re aware that we actually need this. Now we’re admitting that we need a budget to be unstoppable financially, that it’s not an icky thing, and it’s not designed to limit you, it’s designed to empower you. But you’re probably thinking now, how the heck do I do this without feeling like I have to sacrifice anything or guilty when I do spend money on the things that I want to and the things that are important to you because we shouldn’t feel guilty.
Next Steps in Budgeting
And if you’re thinking that, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. We’re going to talk about that part and the really crazy. We’ll call it a shift that you need to make. And it’s really game changing when you do that. We’re going to talk about that in the next video.
