And as simple to the point kind of way, being married, having four kids at home homeschooling, being a CEO, running the household, I’m kind of busy, and I know that you are too.

So here, we get straight to the point. If you’re ready to eliminate fear, stress, struggle, frustration, and guilt from your finances and all the areas they affect, you’re in the right place. Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.

Welcome back to another episode of the Your Money, Your life podcast. Welcome to 2023. You’ve made it. We’re talking today about if you’re feeling overwhelmed by money, and if you’re tired of feeling overwhelmed by money. This is going to be very timely, because we know so many people set resolutions.

Why Money Causes Stress

Those can be great, but they don’t always work. But I think this episode is really going to help you out, especially if you are looking to make a change this year around your money. So let’s talk.

Why are you feeling overwhelmed by money? A lot of it has to do with the feeling of stress that comes up. Okay. So let’s talk about like why money causes stress. Okay, because if we can remove the stress, then the overwhelm doesn’t happen as much.

Because we get overwhelmed because of the stress that causes that comes from money. Right? Makes sense.

So why does money cause stress? We approach money, we think that we just approach money from this logical space. Money is not logical. I mean, it is that it’s pretty simple. And I’ve said before, it’s not rocket science. It’s pretty simple.

But the thing is the the core, and the thing that really matters behind money is emotional. And we’ll say mental, it’s really mindset around money, how we approach things. But the emotional aspect that comes into play with your finances is so key.

I was in a Facebook group the other day, there was somebody that was posting and looking for advice. She was in the middle of getting a divorce, and her and her spouse, they decided that they were splitting the debt. She was getting a lump sum from her, I guess soon to be ex-spouse for his half of the debt.

And I think it was like 32,000, I think they had 64,000, roughly altogether. So she was getting a lump sum of 32,000. And she was asking, what was the best thing to do with it. And everybody was giving her logical answers about how to approach the debt payoff situation, the thing that they weren’t thinking about is the emotional side of it.

And what is important to you, which kind of brings me to the next point of why money causes stress is because there’s such a pressure behind it. There’s a high pressure like you have to get this figured out, or your family or yourself like you’re going to suffer your core needs of you know, shelter, food, water secure that security is directly correlated to figuring out the money thing, right?

So there’s all this pressure behind it. This is emotional behind it, we have to really realize that, you know, we’re not taught this in schools growing up. I mean, we were taught how to balance a checkbook in high school. So like, yeah, okay, I know that but how many people are actually balancing checkbooks?

Now I actually do write checks on a weekly basis, which is a story for another day. There’s a new message on Instagram, we can talk about that. But the fact that it’s emotional, this isn’t just this logical thing that we do. There’s all this pressure behind it to get it figured out.

But we weren’t taught this.

And then what your parents taught you, they’re doing the best that they can with what they know, right? But the system and everything, economics, it’s always changing. So unless like you’re somebody that’s taking intentionality to stay up to date. I mean, they’re flooded people too. Like it’s not, we’re not getting the information that we needed to write growing up. And that ends up that we feel hopeless.

Now back to the story with the Facebook posts that I saw they were talking all about the logical thing. Now, that makes sense at all. But if we don’t talk about the emotional side, and what is going to help them feel the most success, most CMOS progress, because there’s several different ways about that. And really, they all work your debt snowball that avalanche, and I’ll link to another episode in the show notes. Because I think we covered those already. If not, I’m going to talk in just a minute at the end about a way that you can ask me your questions. So we can get this figured out.

But you’re feeling hopeless or talking about, like all the logical strategies. But that’s not what she really needed to sit there and evaluate because again, they all work, which kind of brings me to the next part.

Can Money Lead to Happiness?

So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by money, the question of whether money can bring you happiness is kind of like the next part that I wanted to talk about. So here, if you are feeling overwhelmed by money, you might feel that money can bring you happiness. But money itself doesn’t cause happiness, you can be happy without money, and you can be happy with money.

And that goes back to the emotional side and the mindset behind it and all those things. But the thing that she really needed to consider was what was going to help her see the most progress.

Because if we can create that positive emotion, with that success, you’re going to keep working at it, which is why the whole strict that Power Focus thing doesn’t work long term for most people, because it’s not fun, it’s not enjoyable.

And I know people are gonna say like, okay, it doesn’t have to be, I get that. But the reality is, what are we actually doing when we need to be doing these things like, if you’re not doing the thing that you need to do, like, we need to make a change. So if we make it easier, so again, we can be happy with money and happy without money. But which one is going to motivate her to keep going that she’s going to feel that excitement that progress? Is it going to be having less companies that she’s paying or less interest that she’s paying every single month.

So like that I want to focus on the highest interest, debt snowball, you focus on like the monthly payment amounts, okay? So again, they both work, but which one is going to help her see the progress? For me, I don’t care if I have like six different payments, but the amount, well, I’m gonna go back.

I prefer the Debt Snowball Method to focus on the amounts and roll it up that way. Because I feel like we see the progress, we get the wins faster, as opposed to focusing on the one that has the highest interest. But what I think doesn’t matter.

Feeling Overwhelmed About Money?

It goes back to I can give you the logical explanation, I can give you all those things. But until we talk through how you feel, and how you’re going to approach money, you’re not going to feel that happiness, and then you won’t keep going and then you’re still going to be overwhelmed by money, see where we’re going.

So the overwhelm is because we’re stressed, you’re wanting to be happy, we’re not choosing to create that happiness. And then so what do you do, we have to figure out why we’re feeling overwhelmed about money, okay? You need to move forward, especially if you’re paralyzed, it doesn’t do any good. You’re not seeing that forward action, that forward momentum that you’re looking for. You have to move forward.
