Read: Productive But Not Burned Out
We’re kicking off an “Ask Me Anything” series where I’m answering your questions. So today, let’s talk about productivity.
Time management being effective yet avoiding burnout and all things in between. So inside this episode, I’m going to answer five of the most popular questions that I received from you about managing your time effectively without overdoing it. Because this is the Your Money Your Life podcast for ambitious women coming together to have clarity, prosperity, and confidence with their money without sacrificing precious time and well-deserved fun. So let’s do this!
Welcome to the Your Money Your Life Podcast. I’m your host, Aimee Cerka.
After my husband and I faced three major financial roadblocks in the last six years, I felt like I wasn’t doing all that I could and I had let my family down. It always felt like life was a struggle, like I had to work harder than everyone else. It just came easy to them. And I didn’t feel worthy of success until a coach helped me see the successes in our experiences instead of our failures. This allowed me to create and implement systems to grow our network by 200,000+, while spending time with my loved ones and on my priorities.
Now I help motivated women create the happiness, family life, financial security, and long-term wealth they deserve. If you’re ready to eliminate stress, struggle, frustration, and guilt within your finances, you’re in the right place. Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.
Welcome back to another episode on the podcast. I’m really kind of excited about this. We’re doing an “Ask Me Anything” series. So I asked you on Instagram: What do you struggle with when it comes to time management, productivity without feeling burned out on all of those things?
Because if you know me, if you know that, like you’ve been hanging out with me for a while, you know that I am very, I guess productive with my time, I do get a lot done. And I get told that time and time again, like I don’t know how you do what you do. And there we’re going to talk about some of the strategies and some of that today with the questions that I’m answering, and how that I make this happen without burning myself into burnout. So I’m really looking forward to it.
How to Make Productivity Stick
Alright, so the first question that came in was really a statement, and then a question was, I had somebody or she was a couple, but the general consensus was like, “They want to do better; I want to commit to doing better; but how do I actually make this stick?” Because I know that we’ve all had New Year’s resolutions, or we started to do something in the past, and we weren’t able to stick with it long term, you know, something happened, life came up, etc. And then we’re not able to move forward.
So how do I make this stick when I’m trying to be more productive?
And honestly, the answer is, there is kind of a hybrid, like, don’t try and change everything at once. And that is often what I see happen, especially like we try and do too big of a change. If we can make like the small, consistent changes, it’s going to make that big of a difference. The other part is like setting reminders and having accountability.
Mastering Time Management: Small Changes for Big Results
So if you are utilizing the mastering time management productivity system that like I’ve created, there’s where we talk about like creating reminders in there to help you stay on track. And then we’re also building the system in so that if you miss one day, like there’s something in place to kind of get you back on track. Because when we miss, let’s say that we’re working out five days a week, which at the time of recording, like I’m still very pregnant, so that wouldn’t be me or at the moment.
But if you’re working out like five days a week and you miss one day, it becomes that much easier to miss again and again and again, like we have to have the minimums built into place.
Balancing Pushing Hard and Resting
So instead of setting a goal to work out five times a week, set the goal like for a month period or like one time a week, and you work your way into it. Don’t start out going hardcore five days a week; start with, like, one day a week; start with something that works, and then we can scale from there.
But having that accountability system to help us do the things, because there is a time that we have to push through and make ourselves do things even when we don’t feel like doing them.
Sometimes, which is going to lead us to our second question, which is, “What do you do?” because I get stuck between the “making it happen” phase and just letting things flow and not pushing so hard. And I think when we get to the point where we’re pushing so hard all the time, that’s what leads to, that can very well lead to burnout, we have to be able to listen to ourselves, like is this something that you don’t want to do? So we need to make it happen because of what’s going on?
Like currently, like, I just don’t want to do it because there’s a fear involved? Or have I been pushing myself so hard, and I’m pushing, and I’m not saying consistent. It’s almost like it isn’t an excuse, or is your body trying to tell you something?
This is why we talk about taking off at least one day during the week, like not working yourself, too. It’d be really working yourself to death, but you can make yourself so sick and like your health is sabotage and all those things when you don’t build in that rest. So I think building in that rest is key.
And having systems in place, which again, like we’re talking about the time management productivity here, systems in place to help you do the things that you know that you need to, like, is this actually a needle mover?
Or is this just fluff? And the more in tune that you can get with like the things that actually matter, and focusing on those, the more of the fluff stuff you can cut out. And then you’re going to feel more aligned, you’re going to have more time for rest, and you’re going to be able to hear yourself better whenever you need to rest more.
And then you have the energy whenever you need to do more things. But if you’re stuck in that place, just I want you to, like, set the intention that you’re going to listen to yourself better, which can sound a little crazy sound little out there, I know.
But if you simply like just think about the fact that like you need to listen, like I am open to hearing when I need to rest and when I need to work more, you’ll be surprised how much you pick up. If you’ve loved today’s episode, so far than the Mastering Time Management and Productivity Like a Boss, worksheets, templates, a whole system might be for you.
So if you tried all the things in the past, and it just wasn’t working, the to-do list wasn’t getting done, it felt overwhelming, or you worked yourself to a place of burnout, I had tried all the things in the past, and it just wasn’t working.
A System that Works
So I built a system that works, especially if you’re busy and you’re juggling multiple hats, get more done in less time in a customized, systematized way. Waking Up Early Isn’t the Key to Success
Now back to the episode, okay, third question is, was really a comment almost. But you know, I had to include this because I’m really passionate about this. And it was; I struggled with waking up earlier.
If you’ve been listening for a while, you know I am not a morning person. And I thought I struggled against, you know, there’s so many gurus out there that will tell you like, “You have to get up early; you got to get up, you know, six o’clock or 4:30 or whatever crazy time that you have to get up to be productive to be successful.” And if you’re doing other things, then you know, that’s you’re sleeping in, then you’re like wasting time and all these other things and I bought into that for a long time.
Discover Your Natural Rhythms for Peak Productivity
But as soon as I accepted came to terms, we built our routine around the fact that I don’t have to get up earlier. Like, there was so much peace that came up. And it’s not even that I’m not a morning person, which I mean, I, I definitely feel like I am more of a night owl.
And that is like my preference and those things. But I didn’t like the rushed morning. I have started my business and built a business so that I can be there with my kids. And I didn’t want to be rushing them around. Now we do homeschool, and we have more flexibility and some of those things, so I don’t have to meet that deadline.
But when we quit putting that pressure on ourselves, which is something that we talk about inside this Mastering Time Management and Productivity LIKE A BOSS system, we talk about creating the routines it’s not built off of a specific time; it’s built off of what you need to do on a day-to-day basis. And then it doesn’t matter; you can start it at 7am, you can start it at 9am. It doesn’t matter.
So if you are struggling with waking up earlier, and it’s causing this friction try not waking up earlier, see what happens when I stopped setting an alarm. Remove that pressure. I started waking up earlier because it wasn’t this stress. So, so I’m going to try you do not have to get up early to be successful like that. That is not true. It definitely has to do with what you do with your time.
Building a Supportive Productivity Community
There we go. Next question: I feel so alone. So no one in my circle is doing these things. And then I ended up not doing it because I don’t have that support system. Like, like what do I do?
Find that support system, find that community—I know, there’s so many Facebook groups out there that are still great. I know a lot of us are kind of done with Facebook; we have other things inside the Academy. We of course, I’d love to support you and help you along the way. And let’s know that people get it.
I try to have that supportive community there and Instagram as well. So just like making sure you’re finding people that are aligned with wanting to do better, like find some people find, find your people. And you’re gonna have different groups of people, like I have a homeschool group of people. And I have like a business bestie group of people; I have, like a gardening home setting group of people.
Like, they’re gonna be different groups; not everybody has to get everything, but find the people that are working in that personal development space, and you’re really going to feel so much more energized when you do that.
Just having those people that are kind of like, “Hey, I’ve got your back,” then everything is put together like a pump-up playlist, whenever you need that motivation, some of your favorite songs to go to, just to kind of raise your energy when you feel so alone, that will really help you out.
ADHD or Not, You Can Boost Your Focus with These Tips
And then the last question that I got is “What if you have ADD or ADHD came in as well?” I have tons of ideas, so I never make progress. Now, of course, I am not a licensed medical person, anything like that.
But that is almost one of the flaws that I see in most time management and productivity systems is that they don’t address the fact that we think of things that we need to get done or we have these ideas like this.
In like everyday life, like we have to have things in place so that there’s something that we can do with those ideas, a system in place so that we know where they go, even if it just ends up going on a board or something like for mine is going to be a Trello board.
You know me and Trello that like it just sits there but there has to be a system for it to go somewhere. And that’s one of the things that we design you have to have multiple places. So, like, there has to be something in place, like if you’re home and you come up with this idea.
Managing Ideas with ADHD
That’s one thing if you are out and about, like with your phone; you have to have a way to be able to get these ideas written down so they don’t get forgotten. Because when things that are supposed to be on your to-do list get forgotten and you’re sitting there like, going, “I gotta remember this,” “I gotta remember this,” “I gotta remember this,” And you’re not remembering it is the most frustrating thing and it’s taking up brain space. And we don’t need that, especially if you have other things that are going on, like ADD and ADHD.
Like we need to empower you and your system needs to empower you too. So there we go, we talked about five different questions that I got on time management productivity asked me anything type thing.
So your challenge for today, I want to hear somebody’s message on Instagram, @aimeecerka. Which part resonated with you the most? Which question, did I answer one of your questions?
