The Trap of Overdoing in Money, Life, and Business

Do you ever feel like no matter how much you do, it’s never enough? You’re working harder, you’re giving more, you’re dreaming bigger.

And yet money, life, and business still feel stressful. That’s the trap of the overdoers.

The overdoers are the category of money roles we are going to cover today. I’m going to give you one little shift to help you choose a different money role.

So, let’s get to it.

I’m your host, Aimee Cerka. Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.

Unpacking Money Roles: The Overdoers

Welcome back to Money Simplified. I’m your host, Aimee Cerka. We are back in the middle of our money roll series where we’re pulling back the curtain on the hidden roles that we play with money.

Of course, these aren’t who you are. They’re just characters that you’ve slipped into. The best part is, you can choose a new role at any time.

We’ve already covered the money roles where we’re leaking money and the ones where we are avoiding money.

Today is about the overdoers: how these show up in everyday life and a small shift to help you step into a healthier role.

So, let’s get to it.

The Hustle Hero: Outworking for Security

Now, I feel like I’ve said this every week. Which is probably true—hey, that’s why I teach these things, right? Because you know, been here, done that.

Several of these really resonate, like, “Oh, it hits home. Yeah, that was me.” So if you are identifying with some of these roles, just know I get it.

No shame, no judgment. We’re just going to choose better.

The first overdoer is the Hustle Hero. The Hustle Hero works harder to “earn security.” Some examples would be staying up till 2am working, convinced that if you work more you’ll make more money, or working twelve-hour days because you think you have to do more.

You started your business to be more present with your kids, but all they see is your face in the computer or on the phone, focused, working.

Maybe you’re bragging about being burnt out, as if it proves your dedication. This is one I have really had to work on.

If you’re identifying with the hustle hero, block out one rest hour—guilt free. Something fun, just for you, this week.

Simple Shift: Giving Yourself Permission to Rest

Spend one hour, at a minimum. I would love for you to spend a whole day—just take a day off. You get to decide when your rest hour is; just schedule the time to do nothing.

It might be a challenge the first time. Maybe you need to put your phone in another room.

That’s your challenge, your mini shift, if you are identifying with the hustle hero. You’re not alone.

The Generous Giver: Over-Delivering and Discounting

The second overdoer is the Generous Giver. The Generous Giver discounts, over-delivers, or avoids charging full price.

Maybe you’re tossing in an extra service to keep a client happy. Maybe you’re discounting your services to help out a client, or adding unpaid extras just because you feel like you need to do more.

You might avoid raising prices because it feels greedy, or because you’re worried about what people will think.

That over-delivering is right there: the underlying belief is, “If I don’t give you more, it’s not enough. Am I worthy of this?” When we choose entrepreneurship, we can entangle our worth with money. But they are totally separate things.

Navigating Worth and Pricing as an Entrepreneur

If you want to help those who can’t afford you yet, create offers that work for them. That’s why I have Execution Lab—it’s not worth less, it’s just in a more accessible container.

Your expertise has value. Even if it comes easy to you, it doesn’t mean it’s easy for everyone else.

So, your mini shift if you identify with the generous giver: raise one price—even if it’s just a little bit. Don’t discount. Sit in the uncomfortableness of giving the full price and wait for the response.

The Big Vision Dreamer: Future-Focused, Present-Avoidant

Next up is the Big Vision Dreamer. They are obsessed with the future and ignore the present.

You might have a seven-figure vision board, but you’re not doing the real work now—like bookkeeping or tracking your finances.

Maybe you’re buying luxury office furniture or spa days, but the revenue isn’t there. You talk about having a million-dollar year but you don’t have a basic budget to know where you are now.

The key is balance: know where you’re going, but also know where you’re at—without creating unnecessary meaning about your current state.

Small Step: Grounding Your Dreams in Reality

Set a timer and spend 15 minutes reviewing your current financial picture. If you don’t have anything in place yet, it’s a starting point.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. You’ve just got to start somewhere.

Maybe you’re closer to your dreams than you think!

The Lone Wolf: The DIY Trap

The last overdoer is the Lone Wolf. You wear your DIY badge with honor.

You might say, “I should already know how to do this,” instead of just getting help. I see this all the time, especially with bookkeeping and finances.

Just because it’s not rocket science doesn’t make it your zone of genius.

Why spend hours struggling, when you could pay someone who excels at what you don’t?

If your hourly rate is higher than what you’d pay for expert help, you’re losing money by staying in DIY mode.

Maybe you avoid asking peers or coaches, or you don’t sign up for a hot seat call because you don’t want to look weak.

Even if you feel overwhelmed, you tell yourself you have to figure it out alone.

Action Step: Asking for Strategic Help

The shift for the lone wolf? Ask for help in one small area.

Reach out—to a friend, a peer, someone who can help you with marketing or finances. Even a community you already have access to.

Ask yourself, “How could this be possible? How could it work out?”

Ask for help. It’s a big step, for any overdoer.

Recap: The Five Overdoer Money Roles

To recap, our five overdoers are:

  • The Hustle Hero: Working harder and harder to earn security.
  • The Generous Giver: Discounting or over-delivering to avoid charging fully.
  • The Big Vision Dreamer: Obsessed with the future and ignoring the present.
  • The Lone Wolf: Proudly DIY-ing everything, even when overwhelmed.

When you find yourself falling into one of these money roles, try this centering phrase: “I don’t have to do it all. Support with money makes me stronger.

You can also simply say, “Support makes me stronger.”
