Ep 272: You Don’t Have to Earn the Right to Receive Money in Your Business

The day off is on the calendar, and your first thought isn’t rest. It’s, “Have I earned this?”

If that sounds familiar, nothing is wrong with you. You’ve been taught that anything you receive has to be paid for first with output, and that belief follows you out of the workday and into your own business. It looks like discipline. It’s actually a belief about what you’re allowed to have.

In this episode of Money Simplified, I pull that belief apart so you can see that receiving, giving, and doing are three separate things. Press play, and then read on for the full breakdown.

If you feel guilty for taking a day off, you’re not alone. So many entrepreneurs do. The day arrives, the calendar is clear, and instead of rest you get a quiet question: have I earned this?

That guilt usually gets filed under work ethic or discipline. It isn’t either one. It’s a belief about receiving, the belief that rest, support, and revenue have to be paid for first with output. In this post I’ll walk through where that belief comes from, how it keeps your cash flow stuck, and how to start loosening it.

A Day Off Feels Like Something You Have to Earn

As an employee, you show up, clock in, do the work, and clock out. You still get paid on the days you gave 50 or 70 percent. Nobody asks you to earn the paycheck again every morning.

Then you start your own business, and that grace disappears. Part of it is real accountability. Part of it is the sense that you should be doing more, so rest has to be earned. “I’ll take a day off when things slow down” becomes the sentence you say for years. After the kids go back to school. After the holidays. Things never slow down, because the goalpost keeps moving.

Receiving, Giving, and Doing Are Three Separate Channels

Most of us treat receiving as the second half of an exchange. Effort in, reward out. Here’s the reframe: receiving, giving, and doing are three separate channels, and they don’t run on a tit for tat.

  • Receiving: you get to receive because you get to receive. You’re worthy simply because you exist, and that has nothing to do with your output.
  • Giving: you give because you enjoy giving, not to get something back.
  • Doing: you take action in your business because you’re called to it, not to prove anything.

I see this in my own work. The podcast is a nurture channel and YouTube is a growth channel. I create that content and give that value, and it isn’t a give to get. I get to give, and separately, I get to receive. When you separate the channels, you can show up fully for what you’re giving without waiting for it to pay you back.

Related: The idea that giving and receiving are unlinked channels is one I first taught in The Hidden Belief That’s Blocking You from Receiving, if you want the longer version.

Two Different Fears Hide Inside “Can I Deliver on This?”

When things actually start working, many entrepreneurs get nervous. There are two fears inside that nervousness, and each one has a different fix.

The Practical Fear

“Can my systems and my time actually hold this?” If someone hit the purchase button right now, is everything set up to receive? This one is an easy fix. Spend the time and prioritize it. Watch for perfectionism, though, because it can quietly turn into avoidance.

The Identity Fear

“Do I even deserve this?” This is the deeper one, and systems can’t solve it. No amount of systems or hard work closes a worth gap, because you’ll always move the goalpost on yourself. You can’t build your way out of a worth deficit.

Affirmations alone don’t close it either. You can tell yourself you have a millionaire mind, but if you don’t believe it energetically, there’s still a disconnect. That’s where your capacity to receive and your capacity to trust come in. If you’ve had experiences where trusting didn’t work out, or you learned that everything is up to you, receiving can feel unsafe.

See All the Ways You’re Already Receiving

Here’s what I see with business owners. They set a revenue goal, say a $10,000 month, and they put the blinders on. Meanwhile, off to the side, $1,000 shows up, or they find $100, or a rebate arrives. Those count.

We receive in many different ways. The practice is to anchor into your ability to receive and notice all the ways you’ve been provided for and supported. That’s the piece of the identity work I can hand you in a blog post. The deeper work goes further.

When Busy Becomes a Badge of Honor

I was once interviewed on another host’s podcast, and when we got to receiving capacity she pushed back. “But I work hard, and it’s a badge of honor.” She does work hard. That’s the doing channel. The question is whether you’re doing the work because you enjoy it and you’re called to it, or to prove your worth to everyone else.

Busy can be a way of proving you’re enough, because sitting in the stillness is harder. Researchers writing in Harvard Business Review found that entrepreneurs with obsessive passion reported more burnout than those with harmonious passion. Same work, different relationship to it.

Related: I framed rest as a money-making activity, not a luxury, in Money Confessional: When To Take A Break.

Trust the Seeds You’ve Already Planted

Receiving also means trusting what’s already in motion. Every piece of content and every offer is a seed. Evergreen content keeps working. An episode I put out in September 2026 could be found in 2028, and someone could hear it, say “yes, I need support,” and become a client. That sale comes from work I did long before.

My mentor, Melanie Ann Layer, says, “Pineapple season is coming.” A pineapple takes 18 months to grow, one crown and one fruit. The content you planted six months ago may still be growing.

Your Subconscious Is Trying to Keep You Safe

If you close yourself off because you’re afraid it won’t work, you prove yourself right. Your subconscious mind is powerful, and it protects you. When something looks similar to an old painful experience, it says, “Alert, alert, danger.”

You can thank it for protecting you and then take back control: this isn’t something I need protection from. That’s hard to register when you’re in survival mode, which is why the receiving work starts with safety.

Key Takeaways

  • You don’t have to earn the right to receive. You’re worthy simply because you exist.
  • Receiving, giving, and doing are three separate channels, not a tit for tat.
  • “Can I deliver on this?” can be a practical fear (systems and time) or an identity fear (do I deserve it). Systems fix the first. Capacity work addresses the second.
  • Busy can be a badge of honor and a way of proving you’re enough.
  • You’re already receiving in many ways, and noticing them builds your capacity.
  • The seeds you’ve planted are still growing.

Your Next Step

If this landed, the Money Magnet Challenge is your next step. It’s a 30-day challenge built around your capacity to receive, priced at $55.

If you’re not sure which pattern is running your cash flow, start with the Cash Flow Calculator. It’s a free assessment that walks through 16 patterns, and it shows you the one or two to shift first. The results page also has a way to share your results with me for support, because you don’t have to figure this out alone.

If this one resonated, here’s where else to go from here.

Want the full conversation in writing? Here’s the transcript of the episode, intro to outro.

When’s the Last Time You Took a Full Day Off?

When’s the last time you took a full day off and didn’t feel like you had to earn it first? If that question makes you squirm a little, or you’re justifying it, “But I’m doing this,” I want to introduce you to something today. Your receiving channel, your giving channel, and your doing channel.

They’re three separate things, not a tit for tat. We’ve probably been treating them like it’s one thing, that exchange is there, because I know I’ve heard it, right? The exchange, the sale, all the things. But believing that how much you have to receive has to match how much you’ve done is simply not true.

Today, we’re talking about why you don’t have to earn the right to receive. You’re worthy to receive simply because you exist. It doesn’t have anything to do with your output, your work, all of those things.

And I’m gonna name something else, too. If the idea of things actually working has ever made you nervous, can you deliver on it? There are two different fears hiding within that, and depending on which one it is, there’s a different fix.

One is practical, “Can my systems and my time actually hold this?” And the other is deeper, “Do I even deserve this?” And we’re gonna go through how to tell all of those apart.

All right? So if you have ever worn busy like a badge of honor, I’ve got my hand up as well, been there, done that. And maybe you’re not sure that you’re allowed to take time off, all of that, this one’s for you, so let’s get to it.

It’s time to take my wisdom, my expertise, to help you simplify money and go beyond the numbers. I’m your host, Aimee Cerka. Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.

Do You Feel Like You Have to Earn Rest?

Welcome back to Money Simplified. Today we get to talk about receiving and your receiving capacity. So, let’s start with this. When’s the last time you took a full day off? Not just going through the motions of taking the day off, not sneaking in work a little bit, not thinking about work the entire time you were taking the day off. Because for most of us, we can’t do that.

Do you feel like you have to earn rest? And if you take the rest without feeling like you’ve earned it, you feel like you’re doing something wrong? You’re not alone if so. So many people as entrepreneurs do that, and that’s the interesting double standard here.

As an employee, if you’ve been a W2 employee, you show up, you clock in, you do the work, and you clock out. And you still get paid even if you showed up on days and you were not giving 100%. It could have been a rough day, 50%, 70%, whatever.

Quote graphic reading "I'll take a day off when things slow down," from the Money Simplified podcast on guilt about taking a day off.

I’ll Take a Day Off When Things Slow Down

You start your own business and that grace, part of it’s grace and part of it’s, are we doing what we should be doing? ‘Cause sometimes we can not do what we wanted to do. We’ve all had experiences with employees that are like, “You’re just here for the paycheck,” right? But as entrepreneurs, that’s typically not what we’re doing.

And all of a sudden we have to earn the rest, or it’s, “I’ll take a day off when things slow down.” And you’ve been saying that for years, right? It’s “When the kids go back to school, after the holidays, after this, after whatever the next thing is that comes up,” right?

So this is in September. We’re starting to get into the holidays, right? ‘Cause October is fall holiday. October kind of becomes launch season. But then we’re into the holidays and, “Oh, it’ll be when things slow down.” How many times have you said that?

But the “I’ll take a day off when things slow down” becomes this permanent, right? ‘Cause we’re moving the goalpost.

You Get to Receive Because You Get to Receive

And here’s the thing, receiving, giving, doing. They’re three separate channels. It’s not just one pipeline. You get to receive because you get to receive. You’re worthy to receive.

If we think about this, with the birds, and the ants, and the rest of God’s creation, they are all provided for. They’re not having to earn their place. You’re a part of that. If the ants and some of those things are taken care of that we don’t really like, necessarily, how much more valuable do you think you would be?

I Get to Give, and Separately, I Get to Receive

You get to receive because you get to receive, but we get to give because we enjoy giving. We’re not giving to receive. It’s not a tit for tat thing. You give because you enjoy giving.

And when you can separate this, you can show up and deliver on a masterclass, you can deliver on a podcast like this, and you’re giving because you get to give.

We can also look at the doing as well, right? We’re taking the action and we do the things in our business. So this is a nurture channel for me. YouTube, kind of a growth channel. I’m doing this, I’m giving this content, I’m giving this value, but it’s not a give to get. It’s I get to give, and separately, I get to receive. Do you see the difference there?

Can My Systems Handle It?

So when we feel like we have to earn our right to receive, there’s two different things that are tied into that, and that’s where we’re gonna get into the capacity fears that we talked about in the beginning. So the first one we got into a little bit last week, which is more operational. Can my systems handle it?

Is it set up to receive? If somebody hits the purchase button right now, what happens? Am I gonna be able to actually do this logically?

And if that’s the gap, that’s an easy fix. Spend the time, prioritize it, fix it. Make sure we’re not getting into perfectionism, ’cause then that’s an avoidance thing, right?

Do I Even Deserve This?

But if it’s an identity piece, and it’s, do I even deserve this? There’s no amount of systems and no amount of work either, ’cause you’ll always move the goalpost on yourself. Can you receive just to receive? Are we discounting what we are receiving?

I can’t tell you how many times that shows up, and this is not in my notes, so I don’t think this is coming up in another episode, but oh well. I will work with so many business owners, and they’re like, “I wanna hit 10,000 months in my business. I wanna hit this revenue goal.” Fantastic. That’s the work we’re doing.

But they put the blinders on, and they miss the fact that over here on the side, they got $1,000, or they found $100, or they got this rebate.

See All the Ways You Are Already Receiving

We’re receiving in different manners. We have to anchor into our ability to receive. Embrace that. See all of the ways that you are already receiving. All the ways that you’ve been provided for, all the ways that you’ve been supported, divinely supported.

That is probably the only piece I can really give you right now with the identity because this is so much of a deeper work.

Tip graphic reading "A systems gap needs a system. A worth gap needs trust," from the Money Simplified podcast on the practical fear versus the identity fear.

You Can’t Create Systems to Work Your Way Out of a Worth Deficit

You can’t create systems to work your way out of a worth deficit. But you can’t just slap affirmations on it. Because that’s where we get the mindset versus the energetic piece.

We can have the mindset and you can sit here and tell me, “I have a millionaire mind. Money comes to me always, always.” But if energetically you don’t believe it, there’s still a disconnect, and that’s where we have to work on our capacity to receive, our capacity to trust.

And for those of us who’ve had prior experiences, we can call it trauma, we can call it whatever, where we feel like we haven’t been able to trust, if it’s up to me, if it’s gonna happen, it’s up to me, right? We’ve been disappointed before. This is the key that you’ve gotta learn because when we’ve gotta do it all ourselves, it’s not gonna show up for you.

Am I Using Being Busy as a Badge of Honor?

We’ve kind of touched on this a little bit, but this is where we gotta check ourselves as, “Okay, am I using being busy as a badge of honor?” And I had a podcast host, I was being interviewed on her podcast, and we were talking about this, the receiving capacity, and she wanted to go to that. It was like, “No, but I work hard and I do those things,” and it’s a badge of honor.

And you do work hard. There’s a tremendous amount there, but that’s the doing channel, that we get to do those things because we enjoy doing them. You know that you’re called to do them, so do them. But not out of trying to prove your worth to everybody else.

This is the same thing that we’ve seen when we looked at the lead sources, when we talked about visibility. Are you busy just to prove that you’re enough? Because sitting in the stillness is a lot harder. You’ve gotta sit and trust. We can’t cope.

But to unlock your cashflow, to reclaim your power with money, to step into your unstoppability with money, this is the thing that we’ve gotta work on. And when you can sit back and trust, you get to receive because you’re worthy to receive, not because you’ve hit this invisible quota that you keep changing, right?

Trust the Seeds You’ve Already Planted

And in that, we’ve gotta trust the seeds that you’ve already planted. Every piece of content, every offer, everything. If you’ve got evergreen systems in place, evergreen content, right? You can be listening to this episode when I put it out, yep, this one still drops in September. When I put it out in September of 2026, you could be listening to this in 2028 or watching this. 2027, it could be whatever.

How many hundreds of pieces of content do I have out there that somebody could find at some point and listen to, and it resonates, and they’re like, “Yes, I need support”? And then I get to receive from the sale because they found the work that I did before. Those are all the seeds that you’ve planted, all the one-on-one conversations that you’ve had, all the opportunities and referrals that have showed up.

There are so many things out there, but you’ve gotta trust and have the expectation that it’s all coming together for your good, even if you can’t see it yet. All of those seeds are growing.

Pineapple Season Is Coming

I have a mentor, Melanie Ann Layer, she says, “Pineapple season is coming.” If you don’t know, a pineapple takes 18 months to grow. One single pineapple, one crown. 18 months. So the content, the seeds that you planted six months ago, they might still be growing, but fruit with golden crowns is waiting for.

You will get to receive when we trust, when you trust that you’re able to receive, that you trust that you’re worthy to receive.

Your Subconscious Mind Wants to Keep You Safe

Because if we are closing ourselves off out of fear that we’re not good enough, that we’re gonna be disappointed again, that it’s not gonna work, you’re proving yourself right. Your subconscious mind is amazingly powerful. It protects you. It wants to keep you safe.

And when one bad scary thing happened again before, and something looks kind of similar, it’s gonna be like, “Alert, alert. This is danger.” This is where you have to take back control. “Thank you for being there to protect me, but this isn’t something I need protection from.”

But we’ve got to be able to register that, and when we’re in survival mode, you can’t register that.

Quote graphic reading "Thank you for being there to protect me, but this isn't something I need protection from," from the Money Simplified podcast on the subconscious mind.

Your Next Step

This is so important. I don’t have it here in the show notes, but the Money Magnet Challenge is a 30-day challenge where we work on your receiving, on your capacity to receive. So if this landed for you, your next step would be the Money Magnet Challenge. It’s $55, aimeecerka.com/moneymagnet. I’ll put the link in the show notes as well.

Because when you can acknowledge and be open to receive, all the work that you’ve already done, all the work that you’re continuing to do is that much more powerful.

And if you haven’t already grabbed my cash flow calculator, go check it out. It’s my free tool, assessment-style tool. It goes through the different patterns where I have found if we shift these, these are the things that are stopping you from hitting your cash flow goals that you have. There’s 16 different patterns.

There’s a lot of patterns, but there’s only one or two that you need to shift first to truly see the results. So maybe it’s the receiving capacity, maybe it’s something else. Until you go through the cash flow calculator, you’re not gonna know. That link is aimeecerka.com/cashflow. Also gonna have that in the show notes for you.

And as a bonus, if you didn’t know, on the results page, there’s a way to share your results with me to get support, because you don’t have to figure this out alone. That’s the other part. That’s a whole nother conversation. We’ll get into that, right?

Okay. That’s what we’ve got now. Remember, you’ve got this, and I’ve got you. We’ll see you next time.
