Welcome back to another episode of the Your Money Your Life podcast. I’m your host, Aimee Cerka. Welcome to Episode Five.

I’m really excited to be talking about savings in the kitchen, and meal planning and all of those things.

Now, you probably heard Meal Planning Made Easy is officially available on sale now through Cyber Monday. So, if you haven’t checked that out, it’s a no brainer deal. So, make sure to do that. But let’s go ahead and dive in today because I think this is going to help you out alright?

So a lot of times, this is where you hear the stereotypical “budgeting” and it’s “important to cut costs and cut food costs”. And there’s certain gurus out there that talk about “living off of beans and rice to be able to save money”.

So is the solution to cut food costs, cut what you eat, and maybe sacrifice the more healthy items that you have, just to kind of save some money, right?

I don’t think so. Because your health is important too.

And if you listened to Episode Two, where we talked about making the most of the money you have, we talked about that I even separated out health that it’s its own category now within my budget, because we need to take care of our health and it is important and it’s just something that we need to make a priority.

And again, this isn’t about having a cookie cutter system. It’s about making what’s important to you a priority and fitting your budget within that.

So if it’s important to you to have the healthy food, then I think you should have the healthy food. So let’s keep buying what you love. But use these strategies to make the most of it because it still works.

You might not see a crazy difference. I mean sure you can spend $100 a week to spend to feed a family of four (which honestly, I don’t know how possible that is anymore, but you used to be able to do that) and that would be like what you would see in a lot of the frugal saving spending groups.

But that is not what I’m looking for.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to have that I want to be able to live life and enjoy life and just be financially savvy at the same time. Okay, so let’s dive in.

The first thing that I want you to do, or make sure that you’re doing is start buying in bulk.

Sam’s and Costco are of course them main ones. We had to put like a little disclaimer on there. Personally, I prefer Sam’s, but it doesn’t really matter. They both work.

So this can be great, but you have to be strategic. Because I don’t know about you, but we can go in to Sam’s and impulse in a crazy amount because you find all the cool stuff, right? So be intentional with what you’re buying in bulk set the intention beforehand.

I believe they do some sort of like curbside pickup program. Honestly, I’ve never utilized that and we probably go in about once a month, once every six weeks or so, and we just go in and I go in with the list and we’re very intentional.

But the only thing that they’re allowed, (isn’t really on the list but I know we’re gonna end up buying it) is the Chocolate Chocolate Chip Muffins from Sam’s. They’re just really good and they’re a fun treat. So, buying in bulk is a great strategy to utilize. If you got kids in diapers, I do buy my diapers, pull ups, and flushable wipes from Sam’s because they are cheaper there.

The second thing that you can do to make sure that you’re saving some of that hard earned money when it comes to your groceries is “grocery pickup”, because we do avoid unnecessary impulse spending, because of all the stuff that we grab in the store.

So, I don’t know if you’ve noticed or not, if you use grocery pickup, they’ve realized that they’ve lost money from doing this. They started like, “Oh, hey, do you want this,” and half the time I do need those things. It’s kind of helpful, but at the same time, like they’re trying to find ways to regain that, because they realized that we’re sticking to our grocery list when we use the grocery pickup. Plus, it saves you time as well so, there’s a win-win.

If you are going to go into the store, just a little pro tip, make sure you eat something beforehand, so you’re less likely to pick up the impulse spending.

And my husband, if you’re listening to this, you are an impulse spender. We’ve talked about this many times, there’s nothing wrong with it, we all impulse spend, but he is definitely one that he likes to try all the new stuff at the grocery store, which is fine, because we plan for it, right? But if you eat something beforehand, you’re less likely to pick up some of those things.

The third one is strategic meal planning.

We need to plan in a way that you’re utilizing fresh fruits and veggies and we’re gonna talk all about this inside Meal Planning Made Easy so make sure you grab that. And again, it’s just a no brainer for you to make sure you’re making the most of your time and your money.

So, if we’re going to use kale, then I can grab a head of kale and use it in like three different recipes and we’ll plan those close together. It doesn’t necessarily have to be in the same week, but probably within the same 10 days or so. And we’re making use of it so that I’m not having to buy kale twice, (which we do end up buying kale more, because kale chips are actually a hit and works pretty exciting) but utilize fresh veggies and fruits so that you’re using all of what you’ve bought, and not having to buy it multiple times when you really only needed it, like twice.

Fourth is with our kitchen inventory, this is knowing what to have, so you don’t buy double of things that you already have.

This is so then you’d unnecessarily have double, or on the flip side, not buying something because you thought you had it, but then you actually needed it and then you’re still out of luck and then you can’t make dinner and then you end up going out to eat. We talked about that inside Meal Planning Made Easy as well.

It’s just a simple list. It does not take a lot of time to do especially with the strategies we’re teaching.

There’s a standard level and then a pro level. With the pro level, it takes so little time and it’s going to be so quick for you and such a powerful tool in your tool belt. But have a kitchen inventory at a basic level, that’s a list of everything inside your pantry and freezer so you know what you have on hand, and we’re not losing ingredients to the back of the freezer and rediscovering them when they’re way past expired.

And then the fifth one, is utilizing a meal plan service.

This can be a great solution. Honestly, we’ve never used them, between picky kids and etc., it wouldn’t actually be cost efficient for us. So you can utilize these and they can be a great cost saver, but even if you are using a meal plan service, you still need to be using these other tips that we’re talking about because it’s not a replace all.

You’re still gonna have things that you need to take care of. You still need to be aware of what’s in your kitchen inventory. You still need to be strategic with what you are buying at the grocery store and it would still be smart to buy in bulk for the things that you do need, like household goods that you’re not getting from your meal plan service.

And then the sixth and final strategy that I have for you is your time. Not having time to handle, the kitchen expenses, is costing you money.

We all have the same amount of time, we all have 24 hours a day, avoiding it isn’t the solution, okay? Saying this is just the way it is, is not the solution, we need to have a system that works for you and your family to give you back the time and money that you deserve.

Now, this can be a system that you set up and you oversee, maintaining that CEO role, so just checking in with it, this can be a system that you teach children, if they’re old enough to set up and then you’re just checking in with them. This could be something that you give to your spouse, maybe you have a family assistant that they take care of that but somebody needs to handle the kitchen expenses.

And if nobody else is going to do it, to get your time and money back, I would make it a priority. Especially as costs continue to arise and inflation, it’s all more important that we have the strategies and the systems in place to make the most of the money that you do have and the money that you are spending is going to the places that you want it to go. It’s becoming that much more important. So you have to take this step, you have to make it a priority. It can’t sit on the backburner forever because it’s costing you.

The average family overspends by $7,500 each and every year. I don’t know about you, but I’m guessing a large part of that comes from the grocery bill because I’ve seen my budget and I’ve seen countless others.

I know that when it comes time like to the expenses, groceries are a large portion of them. So, when you get this figured out, the system is put in place. Again, we’re not limiting ourselves.

This is about running things on a systematic manner so that you have more of that time and money that you deserve because it doesn’t have to be a struggle. This doesn’t have to be hard. This doesn’t have to be this overly complicated process.
